Town council decides to widen Jim Bridger Ave.
Posted: Tuesday, Mar 9th, 2010

Chuck Wagon RV Park owner Carl Hofrock has complained several times to the Fort Laramie Town Council that neighbors parking on Jim Bridger Avenue illegally are restricting the traffic flow from his RV park. Specifically, Hofrock says “People in the big RV campers cannot drive out of the park due to illegally parked vehicles”.

Fort Laramie Fire Chief Pete Howes said he has investigated the width and blockage on Jim Bridger Avenue and says the narrowing of the road would impair emergency response in the neighborhood and RV park. Fort Laramie Police Chief Laura Knowlton agrees with the potential of an emergency problem.

Added to that, restaurant owner, Sandy Jankewicz has made several complaints to the Council about people speeding by his restaurant, “Raising unhealthy clouds of dust and putting pedestrians in peril”.

Last year town officials asked Baker & Associates to survey and mark the lots and streets. The survey showed that Jim Bridger Avenue has gradually been encroached on by lawns narrowing it considerably.

The survey also shows that several other lots have overgrown yards, narrowing the town streets.

Last week during the March 2, 2010 Town Council meeting, Mayor Richard Monger and Council members unanimously agreed that based on the survey, the streets would be graded to the appropriate width. The survey was completed using GPS technology and survey pins remarked and/or replaced. Street reclamation by Fort Laramie Maintenance personnel will begin as soon as weather permits.

Monger said that there will be a lot of trees, mailboxes, refuse dumpsters removed from the town street, and possibly some residences could be affected.

“I think people will be very surprised at the results of the survey and the corrective action that must be taken”, concluded Monger.

In response to the complaints of speeders, the Town will lower the speed limits, post signs and increase patrol in the area.

A copy of the survey is available at the Town Clerk’s office.
