Cattle totals down across region, U.S.

TORRINGTON According to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) cattle report, the Jan. 1 total of all cattle and calves in the U.S. is 89.3 million head, 2 percent fewer than Jan.1, 2012 and the lowest New Year inventory since 1952.

Another telling indicator of the current state of the U.S. cattle market is that, according to the same report, as of Jan.1, there were 38.5 million cows and heifers that have calved, down 2 percent from Jan. 1, 2012 inventories and the lowest inventory of all cows and heifers that have calved since 1941.
